Daisy Manufacturing Company is an American airgun manufacturer with a historical connection to the development of paintball equipment. The company manufactured marking devices for the Nelson Paint Company from the early 1970s and subsequently entered the recreational paintball market through an agreement with Canadian equipment manufacturer Brass Eagle in 1993.[1][2] In October 1995, Daisy acquired Brass Eagle's assets, patents and trademarks. Its paintball business was subsequently reorganised into the publicly traded Brass Eagle Inc. in November 1997, separating the company's paintball operations from its traditional airgun business.[1][3] == Involvement in paintball == === Industrial marking equipment === Daisy manufactured paintball marking devices for industrial applications before the establishment of paintball as a recreational sport. According to Brass Eagle's 1999 annual report, filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Daisy began manufacturing marking devices for use in forestry and livestock operations during the early 1970s. The company manufactured markers under contract for the Nelson Paint Company and continued supplying this market until 1993.[1] Nelson marking equipment subsequently became associated with the origins of recreational paintball. The first organised paintball game, held in New Hampshire on 27 June 1981, used Nel-Spot 007 marking pistols. Daisy's involvement in the earlier manufacture of industrial marking equipment therefore preceded the sport's development. === Entry into recreational paintball (1993) === In 1993, Daisy began manufacturing, marketing and distributing paintball products for recreational use under a royalty agreement with Brass Eagle, a Canadian paintball equipment company. The agreement allowed Daisy to expand into the growing recreational paintball market while using the established Brass Eagle brand. The arrangement marked a transition from industrial marking equipment to products specifically marketed for recreational paintball.[1] === Acquisition of Brass Eagle (1995) === In October 1995, Daisy purchased assets, patents and trademarks from Brass Eagle Inc. of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The acquisition included the Brass Eagle name and associated manufacturing assets. Daisy subsequently developed the business's product range and distribution operations. Brass Eagle products were increasingly marketed through major sporting-goods retailers and mass-market retail chains. The company's approach emphasised relatively affordable recreational paintball equipment and accessories.[1][3] === Corporate reorganisation (1997) === In September 1997, Daisy Manufacturing Company Inc. changed its name to Brass Eagle Inc. On 24 November 1997, the business transferred its non-paintball assets, operations and liabilities into a newly created subsidiary named Daisy Manufacturing Company. The new Daisy business was then separated from Brass Eagle through a distribution of shares to existing shareholders. Brass Eagle became a publicly traded company, while Daisy continued operating as a separate airgun manufacturer.[1] The restructuring established a formal separation between the company's recreational paintball activities and its traditional airgun operations. == Relationship with Brass Eagle == Daisy's involvement in paintball is closely associated with the development of Brass Eagle into a major recreational equipment brand. Before the acquisition, Brass Eagle operated as an independent Canadian paintball manufacturer. Daisy initially entered a manufacturing and distribution arrangement with the business in 1993 and subsequently acquired its assets in 1995. Following the 1997 corporate reorganisation, Brass Eagle continued operating independently of Daisy. Brass Eagle was subsequently acquired by K2 Inc. in December 2003.[4] The histories of the two businesses therefore overlap during the period from 1993 to 1997 but should not be treated as identical. == Historical significance == Daisy's involvement in paintball spans two different stages of the activity's development. Its manufacturing work for the Nelson Paint Company formed part of the industrial marking-equipment industry from which recreational paintball emerged. Its subsequent relationship with Brass Eagle contributed to the commercial expansion of recreational paintball equipment during the 1990s. The 1997 separation of Brass Eagle reflected the development of paintball into a distinct commercial equipment market.[1][2][3] == See also == * Brass Eagle * Nel-Spot 007 * Nelson Paint Company * History of paintball equipment * History of paintball markers * Paintball marker == References == # [https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1046112/000104611200000010/0001046112-00-000010-d1.html Brass Eagle Inc., Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended 31 December 1999, filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
