DLX Technologies, formerly known as DLX Technology Group, is an American paintball equipment manufacturer best known for developing the Luxe series of high-end electronic paintball markers. Established in 2008 as a subsidiary of Smart Parts, DLX was created to market a premium marker range with distinctive features, specialised dealer support and a separate brand identity.[1][2] The company continued developing the Luxe following the financial collapse of Smart Parts in 2010. Its subsequent marker generations included the Luxe 2.0, OLED, ICE, X, TM40, IDOL and AIRE.[3][4] DLX is associated with GOG Paintball, Shocker Paintball and the Gardner family, whose earlier business, Smart Parts, developed the original Luxe platform.[2][5] == History == === Establishment (2008) === DLX Technology Group was established in 2008 as a premium brand associated with Smart Parts, the Pennsylvania paintball equipment manufacturer founded by Bill Gardner and Adam Gardner. According to DLX's official history, Smart Parts created a separate marketing organisation for the Luxe to provide a different customer experience from its existing marker lines.[2] The original Luxe was released in 2008 and was displayed at the PSP World Cup at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee, Florida, from 22 to 26 October. Contemporary WARPIG reporting described DLX as a subsidiary of Smart Parts launched earlier that year.[1] The Luxe incorporated several features intended to distinguish it from other electronic tournament markers, including: * An internally routed air supply without an exposed external hose. * Tool-free removal of the bolt assembly and ball detents. * Electronic voice feedback. * Rechargeable battery technology. * Electronic settings accessible through an integrated control interface. The voice system supported English, Spanish, French, German and Russian.[1] DLX demonstrated the marker's maintenance features at the World Cup through a timed disassembly competition.[1] === Continuation after Smart Parts (2010β2012) === The collapse of Smart Parts during 2009β2010 disrupted the manufacturing arrangements for the Luxe. DLX had been established as a separate business and was able to continue supporting the Luxe platform after Smart Parts ceased production. According to the independent technical archive ZDSPB, production of the Luxe was subsequently transferred outside the original Smart Parts manufacturing operation. The revised Luxe 1.5 appeared in 2010, retaining much of the original design while incorporating changes to the eye covers and pneumatic components.[3] DLX subsequently became associated with the successor business GOG Paintball, which was established following the Smart Parts bankruptcy. The Luxe 2.0 was released in 2012, introducing revised electronics, bolt components and other improvements.[3] === Development of the Luxe range (2014β2019) === In January 2014, DLX announced the Luxe OLED, an updated version of the Luxe 2.0. Company representative Darryl Trent clarified that the marker was not being marketed as a Luxe 3.0 because its principal changes involved the electronic display and smaller component improvements.[6] The OLED model replaced the earlier multicolour indicator system with an electronic screen while retaining the Luxe voice interface. DLX subsequently introduced the Luxe ICE in 2016. The ICE incorporated a redesigned pneumatic system, integrated front regulator, revised air-source adaptor and changes to the marker's internal construction.[3] In 2019, DLX introduced the Luxe X, a more substantial redesign of the platform. The X adopted a new bolt system, updated electronics, USB-C charging and improved access to internal components.[3] === Luxe TM40 (2021) === In 2021, DLX introduced the Luxe TM40, named in memory of professional player Tim Montressor. Montressor had worked closely with DLX and contributed to the marker's development before his death in 2020. The TM40 continued the Luxe X design lineage while introducing refinements to the pneumatic system, electronics and marker construction. It also supported conversion between electronic and mechanical operation using an alternative grip-frame assembly.[7] === Luxe IDOL (2024) === DLX released the Luxe IDOL in 2024. The IDOL incorporated revised ergonomics, electronic controls, pneumatic components and maintenance features. A contemporary review published by Paintball Ruined My Life in April 2024 documented the model's redesigned electronic display, updated bolt system and changes to the trigger assembly.[8] The marker retained the Luxe platform's established features, including electronic voice feedback and tool-free maintenance access. === Luxe AIRE (2025β2026) === DLX announced the Luxe AIRE in late 2025, with retail availability beginning during the 2026 season. The marker was developed in collaboration with Method Development and incorporated a new pneumatic platform known as the Primer Core.[9] According to the manufacturer, the AIRE introduced: * A redesigned bolt and pneumatic system. * An electronic control system with a colour AMOLED display. * LiFePO4 rechargeable battery technology. * USB charging and firmware connectivity. * A revised foregrip and frame-mounted regulator. * A redesigned ball-detent system. * Continued tool-free access to maintenance components. The AIRE also adopted Autococker-compatible barrel threads and the Freak POWER barrel system.[9] The marker represented a further departure from the original Luxe internal design while retaining the distinctive voice-feedback system and premium product positioning. == Products == === Luxe electronic markers === The Luxe is DLX's principal marker product line. The original model used an electronically controlled pneumatic system derived from engineering developments undertaken by Smart Parts. Subsequent generations introduced redesigned electronics, air regulation, firing systems and maintenance mechanisms. {| class="wikitable" ! Model ! Introduction ! Its product catalogue includes replacement eye systems, grips, electronic components, bolt systems and maintenance parts for multiple generations of the Luxe.[10] The company's website also offers Shocker-branded equipment and components, reflecting its association with the related paintball manufacturing businesses.[5] == Professional tournament paintball == The Luxe range has been used by professional teams competing in the National Xball League and its predecessor competitions. One of DLX's documented professional partnerships was with Houston Heat. In January 2013, Houston Heat announced that it had renewed its sponsorship arrangements with DLX Technology Group and GI Sportz for the forthcoming season. The team used Luxe 2.0 markers during its successful 2012 PSP professional championship campaign.[11] DLX's association with professional competition continued through subsequent generations of the Luxe. The involvement of professional players in product testing and development also contributed to revisions of the marker platform, including the TM40 and later models.[7][9] == Relationship with Smart Parts and GOG == DLX originated within the Smart Parts business during 2008 but subsequently developed as a separate brand following the financial difficulties and eventual liquidation of Smart Parts. The Luxe was initially manufactured through Smart Parts' production facilities. After the closure of those facilities, manufacturing arrangements changed and the DLX brand continued under the business structure associated with GOG Paintball.[3] DLX and GOG remained associated with the Gardner family and with the later development of the Shocker and Freak product lines.[5] Although these businesses share historical personnel and product development relationships, their brand histories are distinct. == See also == * Smart Parts * GOG Paintball * Shocker Paintball * Shocker * Tim Montressor * Houston Heat * National Xball League * Paintball marker == References == # WARPIG β 2008 PSP World Cup Trade Show.
