Angel Fragoza is an American former professional paintball player best known as a founding member of San Diego Dynasty. He competed with the team during its championship-winning years in the 2000s and was particularly recognised for his speed, accuracy and effectiveness as a snake player.[1][2] Fragoza was previously a member of IronKids, the Californian youth tournament team associated with several future Dynasty players. He was included on Dynasty's original professional roster in 2001 and remained with the team through much of the following decade.[1][3] In 2024, he was inducted into the Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons.[4] == Early career == Fragoza became involved in competitive paintball in Northern California, playing regularly at Mare Island Paintball in Vallejo. During the late 1990s, he joined IronKids, a youth tournament team organised by Oliver Lang and Alex Fraige, with assistance from Eric Crandall. The team brought together young players from across California, including Ryan Greenspan, Yosh Rau and Brian Cole. According to a 2006 retrospective published by the Los Angeles Times, IronKids won all seven ten-player tournaments and four of the five five-player tournaments it entered during its original campaign.[1] The team's success helped several members progress into professional competition. == Professional career == === Formation of San Diego Dynasty === In 2001, Fragoza became a founding member of San Diego Dynasty, a new professional team organised with the involvement of Chuck Hendsch. Contemporary National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) registration records confirm Fragoza's membership of the original professional roster, alongside Fraige, Greenspan, Cole and other established players.[3] Dynasty made its professional debut at the 2001 NPPL Los Angeles Open, finishing third in the professional ten-player division.[5] Later that year, Dynasty won the professional ten-player championship at the 2001 NPPL World Cup in Orlando, Florida, completing a successful inaugural season.[6] === Dynasty championship years === Fragoza remained with Dynasty during its expansion into the NPPL Super 7, Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) and Millennium Series competitions. He appeared on the team's published 2002 NPPL professional roster alongside newly recruited Oliver Lang.[7] In February 2003, Dynasty won the inaugural NPPL Super 7 tournament at Huntington Beach, California. Contemporary WARPIG coverage included photographs of Fragoza at the event.[8] The team subsequently won four consecutive NPPL Super 7 professional season championships between 2003 and 2006.[9] Fragoza was part of Dynasty's established professional line-up during this period. At the 2006 Smart Parts Paintball World Championships, held in May, he appeared on Dynasty's published roster wearing jersey number 187. His hometown was recorded as Vallejo, California.[10] Following Oliver Lang's departure to the Los Angeles Ironmen in 2006, Fragoza remained an important member of Dynasty's competitive line-up. Dynasty won the 2006 NPPL Commander's Cup at the Orange County Fairgrounds, securing its fourth consecutive Super 7 professional season championship.[9] === Later competition === Fragoza continued playing for Dynasty during the later 2000s. Contemporary coverage of the 2009 United States Paintball League (USPL) World Championships in Las Vegas documented his performance in the snake during Dynasty's preliminary-round matches. The report particularly highlighted his aggressive movement against San Antonio X-Factor and Edmonton Impact.[11] By the time Oliver Lang returned to Dynasty in 2011, Fragoza was no longer part of the team's established professional roster. An interview discussing Lang's return identified Fragoza among the former members of Dynasty's original core who were no longer with the team.[12] == Playing style == Fragoza was particularly associated with the snake position, using his speed and ability to advance through low bunkers to create attacking opportunities. He was known by the nickname Ghetto Superstar within the paintball community.[2] Retrospective assessments of his career have highlighted his combination of aggressive movement, accurate shooting and the ability to adapt to changing situations during a game. Iconic Paintball identified Fragoza as an influential example of the modern snake player, particularly during Dynasty's successful period in the 2000s.[2] == Paintball media == Fragoza was featured in Cereal Killerz 2, a paintball documentary produced by Monkey With A Gun and directed by Patrick Spohrer. The production, which debuted at the 2009 PSP World Cup, included player profiles and competitive footage featuring several prominent professional players. Fragoza appeared alongside players including Ryan Greenspan, Konstantin Fedorov, Thomas Taylor and Travis Lemanski.[13] == Recognition == In 2021, Iconic Paintball included Fragoza in its retrospective assessment of notable professional players, recognising his contributions to Dynasty and the development of aggressive snake play.[2] In 2024, Fragoza was inducted into the Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons. The induction formed part of the organisation's second class of honourees, which also included Nicky Cuba, Billy Wing and Bill Gardner. The 2024 class was recognised at the NXL Las Vegas Summit Awards.[4] == See also == * San Diego Dynasty * IronKids * Oliver Lang * Alex Fraige * Ryan Greenspan * Brian Cole * History of tournament paintball == References == # [https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-may-07-tm-paintball19-story.html Los Angeles Times, Alex French, "War Games", 7 May 2006.
