Adam Gardner is an American former professional paintball player, team owner and paintball equipment industry executive. He is best known as a co-founder of the All Americans tournament team and Smart Parts, the Pennsylvania-based equipment manufacturer established with his brother Bill Gardner in 1989.[1] Gardner competed with the All Americans during their successful professional campaigns of the 1990s and early 2000s. He subsequently helped establish the Philadelphia Americans, becoming a player and co-owner of the team that won the inaugural National Xball League (NXL) championship in 2003.[1][2] Following the closure of Smart Parts in 2010, Gardner remained involved in paintball equipment manufacturing through businesses associated with GOG Paintball, DLX Technology and Shocker Paintball.[3] He was inducted into the inaugural Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons class, officially designated 2023.[4] == Playing career == === Early career and All Americans === Gardner began playing paintball in 1986 alongside his brother Bill. The brothers initially participated in recreational games before entering organised tournament competition. According to their retrospective account published by DLX Technology, they competed at the Wolf's Lair 20-man tournament with a group of approximately 15 other players. The team finished second behind the PMI Piranhas, receiving a US$10,000 prize. The experience encouraged the brothers to establish the All Americans as a dedicated tournament team.[1] The All Americans subsequently entered the Line SI tournament series, progressing through the amateur ranks before winning the 1991 Masters Championship in Tennessee.[1] During the 1990s, the team became one of the leading professional organisations in American paintball, competing against established teams including Chicago Aftershock and the Ironmen. The All Americans won multiple major five-player and ten-player championships, including the professional five-player division at the 2000 Paintball World Cup.[1][5] === NPPL competition === Gardner continued competing with the All Americans during the early 2000s. Contemporary National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) rosters identify him as a member of the team's professional squad in 2001 and 2002. The 2001 roster listed Bill Gardner as captain, alongside Adam Gardner, Frank Connell, Mark Biletnikoff, Jason Green, Dan Kerszencwejg, Roddy MacDonald and other established players.[6] At the 2001 NPPL Chicago Open, held at Badlandz Paintball Field in Crete, Illinois, the All Americans won the professional ten-player division.[7] The team subsequently finished third at the NPPL Atlantic City Gambler's Open, behind Aftershock and the Southern California Ironmen.[8] === Philadelphia Americans === In 2003, Gardner became involved in establishing the Philadelphia Americans, a professional franchise developed from the All Americans organisation for the inaugural NXL season. The team competed in the new X-Ball format against other professional franchises, including Chicago Aftershock, Los Angeles Ironmen, Oakland Assassins and Detroit Thunder. Gardner was registered as player number 07 on the original Philadelphia Americans roster. The team was coached by Darryl Trent, with Bill Gardner serving as an assistant coach.[9] At the 2003 PSP World Cup in Orlando, Florida, Philadelphia defeated the Oakland Assassins in the NXL championship final. Contemporary WARPIG reporting specifically identified Adam Gardner as a player and team co-owner during the championship celebrations.[2] Philadelphia successfully defended its NXL championship in 2004, defeating Detroit Strange.[1] The All Americans and Philadelphia Americans remained closely associated with Smart Parts, which supplied equipment and financial support to the professional organisation. == Paintball industry career == === Smart Parts === In 1989, Adam and Bill Gardner founded Smart Parts in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The company initially developed aftermarket paintball barrels and accessories, using the All Americans as a competitive testing and promotional platform.[1] Its early products included the All American barrel, followed by customised Autococker and Automag markers. Smart Parts subsequently expanded into electronic paintball marker manufacturing. Its products included the Smart Parts Shocker, Smart Parts Impulse, Smart Parts Ion and Freak Barrel System. The company became a major equipment supplier during the growth of electronic tournament paintball in the 1990s and 2000s. According to the founders' company history, Smart Parts employed more than 250 people by 2006, operating manufacturing, assembly, engineering and sales facilities in Pennsylvania.[1] === Equipment patents === Gardner was named as a co-inventor on several patents relating to paintball marker technology. United States Patent 6,035,843, granted on 14 March 2000, identifies Adam Gardner, Bill Gardner, David Smith and Raymond Gaston as inventors of a pneumatically operated projectile-launching device incorporating electronic controls.[10] Smart Parts subsequently became involved in patent litigation concerning electronic paintball marker technology. These disputes formed part of the company's commercial activities during the 2000s and are documented separately in the Smart Parts article. === GOG Paintball and DLX Technology === Smart Parts entered bankruptcy proceedings in May 2010 and was subsequently liquidated. Following the closure, the Gardner brothers established new business operations associated with GOG Paintball and the continued development of paintball equipment.[3][11] These operations included products marketed under the GOG, Shocker Paintball, Luxe and Freak brands. In a 2021 interview with Paintball Sports Magazine, Gardner discussed the restructuring of the business and the continuing development of the Shocker AMP and Luxe marker ranges. At the time, he was identified as chief executive officer of Philadelphia Americans LLC, the company behind the GOG, Luxe, Shocker and Freak brands.[3] The newer businesses maintained historical and commercial connections to Smart Parts but were distinct from the original company that entered bankruptcy in 2010. == Recognition == Gardner has been recognised for his involvement in professional tournament paintball and the development of commercial paintball equipment. In 2023, he was included in the inaugural Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons class. The programme recognised his professional playing career with the All Americans and Philadelphia Americans, alongside his work in developing Smart Parts and subsequent equipment businesses.[4] His individual induction profile is labelled 2022, although the official programme identifies 2023 as its inaugural induction class. Gardner also served on the judging panel for the Hall of Icons' 2025 induction class, alongside professional players and industry figures including Tom Cole, Matty Marshall, Alex Fraige and Todd Adamson.[12] == Selected career milestones == {| class="wikitable" !
