The 2002 Paintball West 3-Man League, also listed in contemporary coverage as Super-3, was a three-player paintball competition organised by Wayne Rolleston in Auckland. Its January opening event, reported as The Gathering, took place at Actions Paintball in Swanson. Subsequent rounds were held at Kumeu. Five completed rounds are documented through June, when GPS led the cumulative standings with 105 points.[1][2][3][4][5][6] == Competition == The opening round took place on 26 January 2002, with ten teams competing on an inflatable field supplied by Rolleston. Games lasted five minutes and used a centre-flag, hopper-only format. Teams received one point for the first flag pull and two for the flag hang, with no points awarded for eliminations. Players from teams not currently competing helped referee the games.[1] The March report identified Rolleston as the league organiser and described a planned ten-round competition. Following discussion of scoring and penalties, a vote at the April round retained the existing format and rules.[2][3] == Documented rounds == === January === Saints 2 won the opening event with 20 points. Saints 1, GPS and GBR finished level on 16 points. Five teams travelled from Rotorua, with Peter Mumby of Tag n' Release credited with arranging their participation.[1] === March and April === GPS scored 21 points in March and 28 in April, leading the cumulative standings after both rounds. The April event was the third completed round of the league.[2][3] === May and June === Seven teams attended the May round in poor weather. GPS scored 16 points, ahead of Smash on 13 and GBR on 12. Saints did not enter that round.[4] The June report recorded the fifth completed round, using scores supplied by Rolleston. GPS scored 24 points and extended its cumulative total to 105, ahead of GBR on 67 and Smash on 65.[5] == Results through June == The following figures reproduce the June report. They are interim league results, not final championship standings.[5] {| class="wikitable" ! Team !! January !! March !! April !! May !! June !! The table retains the published figures.[5] The separate January report used the names Saints 1 and Saints 2, recorded Menace (Rotorua) on 7 points rather than 6, and listed Nutters (Rotorua) on β1. These differences are not reconciled in the later cumulative table.[1][5] == References == # Dazz Marshall, The Gathering, NZ Paintball Online, January 2002. # Rob Maddox, Paintball West β 3-Man League, NZ Paintball Online, March 2002. # Rob Maddox, Paintball West β 3-Man League, NZ Paintball Online, April 2002. # Rob Maddox, Paintball West β 3-Man League, NZ Paintball Online, May 2002. # Rob Maddox, Paintball West β 3-Man League, NZ Paintball Online, June 2002. # NZ Paintball Online, Paintball Articles & Documents, 2002 article index.
