Smotrov has played as a leading snake-side attacker. A 2019 scouting report from the NXL's broadcast platform highlighted his speed, aggression and timing, while noting that his attacking decisions had become more controlled and consistent. [2]

The report described his partnership with [[Alexander Berdnikov]], who supported his advances and could continue the attack after Smotrov was eliminated. This combination allowed Red Legion to maintain pressure on the snake side while its other players attacked elsewhere on the field. [2]

In 2023, ''Iconic Paintball'' included Smotrov in its selection of 30 professional players under the age of 30, highlighting his attacking ability and development within the Russian Legion coaching programme. [1]
