== Historical significance == The development of paintball markers reflects the transition of paintball from a recreational activity using industrial marking equipment into a sport supported by specialist manufacturing and engineering. Early developments concentrated on improved reliability, ammunition capacity and convenience. Semiautomatic systems changed the pace of competition, while electronic controls introduced additional flexibility in marker operation. The emergence of distinct pump-action, mechanical, electronic and magazine-fed categories also allowed equipment to develop for different playing formats. The history of individual designs, manufacturers and technological systems is documented in the corresponding WikiPaintball articles.
