== Paintballs == Paintballs are the projectiles fired by conventional paintball markers. A standard paintball consists of a gelatin-based shell containing a coloured liquid filling designed to leave a visible mark when the projectile breaks on impact. Modern recreational paintballs generally use water-soluble, non-toxic filling materials. Paintballs are manufactured in several sizes, with .68 calibre historically the most common in conventional recreational and tournament play. Smaller .50-calibre paintballs are also used, particularly in lower-impact recreational formats. The composition, shell thickness, consistency and breakage characteristics vary according to the intended application. Tournament paintballs are generally designed to break reliably on impact while remaining sufficiently durable for transportation, loading and firing. Paintballs are commonly sold in bags and cases, with cases containing 2,000 paintballs widely used in commercial and tournament paintball. Manufacturers historically associated with paintball ammunition include ZAP Paintball, R.P. Scherer, Diablo Paintball, Draxxus and GI Sportz.
