== History == === Early online paintball discussion === Before the widespread adoption of the World Wide Web, paintball players exchanged information through electronic bulletin board systems, mailing lists and Usenet. Usenet was a distributed discussion network in which messages were organised into subject-specific newsgroups. Unlike a conventional website, Usenet did not depend on a single central server. Messages could be distributed between participating news servers and accessed using compatible software. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, paintball discussions appeared within broader sporting and recreational newsgroups. As the sport developed, participants sought a dedicated discussion group. === Proposal for rec.sport.paintball === The proposed newsgroup was intended to provide a central location for paintball discussion. The name '''rec.sport.paintball''' placed the group within Usenet's recreational sports hierarchy. The proposal followed the formal Usenet newsgroup creation process. This involved public discussion of the proposal, circulation of a charter and a vote. Geoff Bronner coordinated the creation vote. === April 1992 vote === On 15 April 1992, Geoff Bronner announced the result of the vote to create rec.sport.paintball.[1] The proposal received: {| class="wikitable" ! Vote ! Number |- | In favour | 195 |- | Opposed | 43 |- | Total | 238 |- | Margin | 152 |} The vote satisfied the required approval threshold. Bronner announced that a five-day waiting period would follow before the creation process continued. The result is preserved in the rec.sport.misc Usenet archive. === Establishment === Following the successful vote, rec.sport.paintball was established as a dedicated paintball newsgroup. Its creation provided a permanent discussion location for paintball enthusiasts using Usenet. The group became active during a period of rapid growth in the sport. Players could communicate across geographic boundaries without relying on printed magazines or local paintball businesses.
