== History == === Origins === World Cup Asia developed from efforts to establish Malaysia as an international destination for tournament paintball during the early 2000s. In December 2004, Galactec and Xtion Paintball organised [[Nation Cup 2004]] at Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. The event was subsequently described by its organisers as a pilot project for larger international competitions. The following year, the [[Asia Pacific Paintball Championship 2005]] expanded the concept, attracting international teams, professional players and commercial sponsors. These events contributed to the establishment of the [[Paintball Asia League Series]], an international tournament circuit connecting teams and organisers across the Asia-Pacific region. [2] World Cup Asia was launched in 2006 as a major international championship associated with PALS. === Inaugural tournament, 2006 === The inaugural Paintball World Cup Asia was held from 8 to 10 December 2006 at Xtion Paintball Park in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. A contemporary account published on 19 December 2006 reported that approximately 90 teams participated. The event was organised by Xtion Paintball in collaboration with Malaysian government ministries and in association with PALS and international paintball organisations. [1] The tournament attracted 54 Malaysian teams and 36 international teams, according to historical event records. [5] The Iranian team Datis won Division 1 and was also identified as the overall PALS champion for 2006. [1] The inaugural event established World Cup Asia as an international competition involving both Malaysian teams and visiting teams from other countries. === Development from 2007 to 2010 === World Cup Asia continued to be organised annually during the late 2000s. The organisers' historical promotional material identifies editions held in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, following the inaugural event in 2006. [6] During this period, the tournament developed a reputation as one of the largest international paintball competitions in Asia. Historical event records report that the 2009 edition was held from 19 to 22 November and attracted approximately 120 teams. Participating countries included France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Guam, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, India and Malaysia. [5] The competition was associated with international tournament formats and received recognition and support from established overseas paintball organisations. World Cup Asia also became an important event for teams seeking international experience outside the established North American and European tournament circuits. === Langkawi and the 2011 championship === The 2011 Paintball World Cup Asia was held from 10 to 13 November at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. The event was the final round of the 2011 Paintball Asia League Series, following earlier tournaments in Bangkok, Thailand, and Clark, Philippines. [3] The organisers promoted the event as the first international paintball tournament to be held entirely indoors, using an air-conditioned exhibition hall and artificial-turf playing fields. The venue was the Mahsuri Hall within MIEC, a major exhibition facility also associated with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition. [3] The event was held under the royal patronage of a princess of Kedah, according to contemporary promotional material. The 2011 championship also featured the Intercontinental Cup, bringing additional international attention to the event. === International participation in 2011 === Contemporary registration announcements published by the organising committee provide detailed evidence of the event's international reach. An announcement dated 4 September 2011 listed 125 registered teams, including 63 international teams and 62 Malaysian teams. A subsequent update dated 24 September listed 144 registered teams, comprising 77 international teams and 67 Malaysian teams. [7] The September registration update recorded the following divisional entries: {| class="wikitable" ! Division ! Registered teams |- | Division 1 | 22 |- | Division 2 | 40 |- | Division 3 | 46 |- | Division 4 | 36 |- ! Total ! 144 |} These figures represent registrations reported before the tournament rather than a verified final count of participating teams. The published registration list included teams from Russia, Germany, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, Iran, Guam, Taiwan, Australia and other countries. Team Fei-Pi from Tahiti was also listed among the Division 1 entrants, demonstrating the championship's reach into French Polynesia and the wider Pacific region. [7] === World Cup Asia 2012 === The 2012 Paintball World Cup Asia was held in Langkawi from 9 to 11 November. The event was part of the Paintball Asia League Series and featured multiple competitive divisions alongside the Intercontinental Cup. Contemporary coverage by Social Paintball published the championship standings, including results for Divisions 1 through 4 and the Intercontinental Cup. [8] Thailand's Infernal won Division 1, ahead of STK from Australia and Nemesis Legion from Malaysia. The Intercontinental Cup was won by Edmonton Impact, with San Diego Dynasty finishing second and Los Angeles Infamous third. === World Cup Asia 2013 === The 2013 championship was held in Langkawi from 15 to 17 November and was promoted as the NAZA World Cup Asia. The event was organised by PALS and the Asia Pacific Paintball Federation, with AKR involved in hosting the tournament, according to contemporary media coverage. [9] The Intercontinental Cup was won by Edmonton Impact, followed by Toulouse TonTon, San Diego Dynasty and Portland Uprising. South Africa's Johannesburg Dynamix won Division 1, while Menace won Division 2, Duckside won Division 3 and Kucha Lana won Division 4. [9] The event attracted international media coverage, including video and photography published by Social Paintball. === World Cup Asia 2014 === The 2014 Paintball World Cup Asia was held in Langkawi from 7 to 9 November. The championship formed part of the 2014 Paintball Asia League Series season. Thailand's teams achieved notable results at the event, winning Divisions 1, 2 and 3, according to historical summaries of the country's competitive paintball achievements. [10] The tournament's results and team entries are also preserved in the PBLeagues competition database. [11] === World Cup Asia 2015 === The 2015 tournament was held in Langkawi from 30 October to 1 November. The championship included an Open X-Ball competition, Division 1 X-Ball and additional competitive divisions. PBLeagues records identify Thailand's Aisawan as the Division 1 winner, followed by Japan's Cobra Kai and Malaysia's KTM Nemesis Legion. [12] The Open X-Ball competition also featured national teams representing countries from Europe, Asia, Oceania, Africa and North America. The event's registration and results records provide evidence of World Cup Asia's continued international reach.
