== History == === Early international competition === Joy Division developed within the Swedish tournament paintball scene during the 1990s. Magued Idris became closely associated with the organisation as a player, captain and co-founder.[1] The team was competing internationally by 2000, when contemporary WARPIG records documented its participation in the professional 10-man division at the NPPL Los Angeles Open.[8] Joy Division subsequently became a regular competitor in the European Millennium Series, participating in tournaments against leading American and European teams. During this period, the team also recruited guest players from established American professional organisations. At the 2001 Millennium Series Portugal tournament, players from the Southern California Ironmen competed as guests with Joy Division.[9] === 2001 Mayhem Masters victory === Joy Division won the professional division at the 2001 Mayhem Masters, held in Brighton, England. The team reached the final round against Ground Zero, Image and Avalanche. Contemporary WARPIG reporting documented Joy Division's victory following a closely contested final against Ground Zero. The two teams entered their final match separated by a single point in the standings. Ground Zero held a player advantage during the match, but an injury to Chris Cole and a subsequent interruption affected the closing stages. Joy Division successfully defended its remaining positions until the match ended, winning the professional championship by one point.[4] The victory established a documented major European tournament championship for the Swedish organisation. === Millennium Series and Joy Masters === Joy Division continued competing in the Millennium Series during the early 2000s. Stockholm also hosted the Joy Masters, a Millennium Series tournament held in the Swedish capital. The 2001 Joy Masters took place in August, using a public recreational area on the outskirts of Stockholm. Contemporary WARPIG coverage documented extensive spectator facilities, multiple tournament fields and professional teams from across Europe and North America.[10] The event formed part of the development of high-profile professional paintball tournaments in Sweden. Joy Division also participated in American NPPL events, including the 2003 Miami Commander's Cup and the 2004 Huntington Beach Open. At Huntington Beach in 2004, the team finished joint first in the professional preliminary standings with San Diego Dynasty before progressing to the quarterfinals.[11] === NPPL Super 7 competition (2005–2007) === Joy Division became a regular European participant in the NPPL Super 7 professional division during the mid-2000s. The team reached the professional semi-finals at the 2005 NPPL Miami Commander's Cup, joining Dynasty, Sacramento XSV and Portland Naughty Dogs among the final four teams.[12] In 2006, Joy Division competed in the American Super 7 season against leading professional teams including Dynasty, Sacramento XSV, the Ironmen and Miami Rage. At the Boston Open, the team finished third in the professional division. Joy Division subsequently recorded its first NPPL Super 7 professional tournament victory at the San Diego Open, held from 8 to 10 September 2006. The Swedish team defeated the Los Angeles Ironmen in the professional final, winning the first match 98–6, losing the second 15–95 and winning the deciding match 95–18.[5] At the season-ending Commander's Cup, Joy Division reached another professional final against Dynasty. Dynasty won the deciding match, with Joy Division finishing second at the event. The result secured Joy Division third place in the overall 2006 NPPL professional season standings.[13] The team continued competing in the NPPL during 2007. At the Huntington Beach Open, Joy Division finished fourth, with Magued Idris identified as the team's captain in contemporary tournament reporting.[14] === European championship (2007–2008) === Joy Division also achieved significant success in the European Millennium Series. The team won the 2007 Champions Paintball League season championship, the highest professional division of the Millennium Series.[6] At the 2008 Iberian Cup in Málaga, Spain, Joy Division began its European championship defence by winning the opening tournament. The team defeated Denmark's Copenhagen Ducks 5–0 in the professional final on 6 April 2008.[6] The published roster included: * Magued Idris – Coach. * Carl Brian. * Max Lundqvist. * Eric Mellgreen. * Sebastian Samuelsson. * Karl-Johan Samuelsson. * Lalle Sjödahl. * Magnus Storkenfeld. The team continued competing in the Champions Paintball League throughout the remainder of the 2008 season. === NXL Europe === Following the acquisition of the Millennium Series by the National Xball League in 2018, Joy Division continued competing in European professional X-Ball. The team finished fifth in the 2019 NXL Europe professional season standings, including a third-place finish at the Amsterdam World Championships.[15] In January 2020, equipment sponsor Bunkerkings published a team profile featuring players from Sweden, Norway and Italy. The documented squad included Karl-Johan Samuelsson, Göran Åhs, Fabian Berggren, Kim Storås, Knut Andre Olstad, Edoardo Navone and Simone Calvo.[16] The team continued participating in European competition following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the 2021 NXL European Championships, Joy Division finished second behind Toulouse TonTons.[17] === Recent competition (2023–2026) === In 2023, Joy Division won the professional division at the NXL Europe Netherlands Invitational. The team subsequently finished fourth at the British Invitational and second at the European Championships in France. These results gave Joy Division second place in the overall 2023 NXL Europe professional season standings, behind Toulouse TonTons.[18] During the 2024 season, Joy Division finished sixth in the European professional rankings.[19] In 2025, the team won the Portugal Invitational and recorded a third-place finish at the British Invitational. Joy Division finished third in the overall 2025 NXL Europe professional series standings, behind Breakout Spa and Lucky 15s Staffordshire.[20] The team continued competing in 2026, recording third-place finishes at both the British Invitational and European Championships. Joy Division finished fifth in the 2026 NXL Europe professional season standings with 425 ranking points.[7]
