== History == === Origins === Hollywood Sports Park originated as an expansion of the commercial paintball operations associated with [[SC Village]] in Southern California. SC Village had been operating since approximately 1984 and had developed into one of the region's largest recreational paintball facilities. By the late 1990s, its owners, Dennis Bukowski and Giovanni D'Egidio, were considering a second venue that would accommodate additional customers and provide a more elaborate recreational experience. The proposed facility was intended to combine paintball with other action sports and entertainment activities. A July 2000 article in the ''Los Angeles Times'' identified Bukowski's company, SJS Enterprises Inc., as the developer of a planned $9 million complex in Bellflower.[1] The project was designed to introduce paintball to a wider audience by presenting it as part of a mainstream recreational and entertainment facility. === Development of the Bellflower site === Hollywood Sports Park was developed on the site of the former Bellflower Golf Course. The project was undertaken in cooperation with the City of Bellflower and its recreation authorities.[7] A contemporary WARPIG report described the proposed development as replacing the golf course with a themed action-sports complex. The plans included paintball fields, BMX facilities, skateboarding, rock climbing, volleyball, basketball, restaurants, arcade games and other attractions. The development attracted both support and opposition from local residents. Supporters viewed the project as an opportunity to increase employment, commercial activity and recreational opportunities. Opponents expressed concern about the loss of the existing golf course.[7] The project was promoted as a substantial investment in the city's recreational infrastructure. === Construction === In January 2001, the ''Los Angeles Times'' reported that Hollywood Sports LLC planned to break ground on the 23-acre development on 23 January 2001.[5] The project was originally expected to open during 2001. However, construction took longer than anticipated. An April 2002 WARPIG report documented delays and described the park as approaching completion.[2] One unusual obstacle was the discovery of a protected hawk nesting on the property. According to the contemporary report, the discovery threatened to delay or prevent construction until a tornado destroyed the nesting tree. The bird was subsequently reported to have returned to the area. The park was eventually prepared for a summer 2002 opening. === Opening in 2002 === Hollywood Sports Park opened during the summer of 2002.[8] A January 2004 press release distributed through WARPIG confirmed the 2002 opening and identified Bukowski and D'Egidio as the owners of both Hollywood Sports Park and SC Village. The release described Hollywood Sports Park as a second facility developed partly to accommodate demand at SC Village. The park was designed as a more elaborate and accessible entertainment venue than a conventional paintball field. Its location in Bellflower placed it within the densely populated Los Angeles metropolitan area. This distinguished it from many commercial paintball facilities located on larger rural or semi-rural properties.
