Editing Kamo Karzi (New Zealand Paintball Team)

Kamo Karzi, also written Kamokarzi, was an Auckland-based New Zealand paintball team formed around 1994. The team participated in both social and tournament paintball, won Division Two of the 1997 National Paintball League, and finished third overall at the 1997 Auckland Nationals, according to its contemporary website.[1]

Kamo Karzi appeared in the Valhalla National Rankings for five consecutive seasons from 1997 to 2001.[2][3][4][5][6]

History
Formation and early tournaments
The team's website, preserved in a snapshot dated 4 February 1998, states that Kamo Karzi formed around 1994 after users of two bulletin board systems organised a social paintball game. Regular social games subsequently provided a route for new members to join the team.[1]

Kamo Karzi's first tournament was the 1994 Winter League run by Tactics Paintball. The team received the Most Improved trophy but did not achieve a placing.[1]

In 1995, Kamo Karzi competed at the Taupo Nationals with sponsorship from RP Scherer and finished fourth.[1]

The team subsequently lost five regular players, including its captain, to another team. Its website described a rebuilding period of approximately a year. Wolf, an original member from 1994, became captain in 1995.[1]

1997 season
With sponsorship from Combat Vision, Kamo Karzi entered and won Division Two of the National Paintball League in 1997.[1]

The team then finished third overall and first in Division Two at the two-day Auckland Nationals.[1]

Kamo Karzi also placed third in the retrospectively compiled 1997 Valhalla rankings, with a score of 74. This ranking was separate from its Nationals result.[2]

1998–2000
Kamo Karzi ranked ninth in the 1998 Valhalla standings with 43 points, ninth in 1999 with 63 points and eighteenth in 2000 with 59 points.[3][4][5]

2001 season
In the seven-player Valhalla standings dated October 2001, Kamo Karzi ranked tenth with 111.4 cumulative points. Its recorded contributions were 63.9 points from the opening round of RotoVegas and 47.5 points from the opening round of the New Zealand Paintball Nationals.[6]

These figures were calculated for Valhalla ranking purposes rather than being the tournaments' raw game scores.[6][7]

Photographic identifications
A historical team photograph published by the House Steiner Facebook profile contains tags identifying James Keogan and Wayne Carkeek. Carkeek also recalled retaining his Kamo Karzi team badges and a speedball shirt numbered 3.[8]

The original caption tentatively identifies an Actions tournament at Takanini. In the comments, Andrew Walbran identifies the venue as Actions at Te Atatū North and suggests 1997–1998; James Keogan identifies the year as 1997. These are retrospective identifications.[8]

The photograph was uploaded on 23 August 2011. This is its publication date, rather than the date it was taken.[8]
