Editing Wellington Hybrid (New Zealand Paintball

Wellington Hybrid was a competitive paintball team and club based in Wellington, New Zealand. First documented in September 2004, Hybrid competed in New Zealand and represented the country during the inaugural season of the Australian X-Ball League (AXL) in 2005. The team won the second AXL round at Fox Studios in Sydney and finished eighth at the 2005 Sydney Masters.[1][6][9]

Martin Dannefaerd was the team's captain and manager. Hybrid combined players from several established New Zealand teams and Wellington's informal Sunday Club.[3]

History
Formation
The earliest recovered contemporary record of Hybrid is an official website announcement dated 5 September 2004. The post introduced “Team Hybrid” as a newly organised team and described it as “the new team on the block”.[1] This establishes that the team existed by September 2004, but does not provide its precise founding date.

The announcement was signed “Marty”, apparently referring to Martin Dannefaerd, who was subsequently identified as Hybrid's captain and manager. The wording indicates that the organisation involved several participants and does not establish a sole founder.[1][3]

Hybrid's original website was hosted at `hybrid.wpsa.org.nz/hybrid/`. It contained sections for the team, members, results, sponsors, paintball information and an image gallery. The site offered sponsorship packs and used `hybrid@wpsa.org.nz` as its contact address.[1]

The website linked to the WPSA, the New Zealand Paintball Players Association and NZPB Online. These links document Hybrid's connections with the contemporary New Zealand paintball community, but do not establish that those organisations owned or administered the team.[1]

By December 2004, the site had been rebuilt at `hybrid.wpsa.org.nz`. Matt Wong published a welcome message describing it as the future online home of the “New Zealand Hybrid Paintball team”.[2] Later sources consistently used the name Wellington Hybrid.

An industry profile published in March 2005 described Wellington Hybrid as a combination of leading New Zealand teams and players. It identified membership of Wellington's informal Sunday Club as an important source of playing experience.[3]

2004 competition
The 2005 industry profile stated that the teams from which Hybrid was assembled had finished among the top four at the major events they entered during 2004. It also reported that Wellington Hybrid concluded the 2004 New Zealand series in fourth place.[3]

The wording does not establish that Hybrid itself contested every major event during 2004 or that all of the cited placings were achieved under the Wellington Hybrid name.

Australian X-Ball League
Hybrid prepared during late 2004 to accept New Zealand's place in the inaugural Australian X-Ball League. A website item written by Dannefaerd discussed the first teams announced for the following year's competition.[2]

On 5 January 2005, Dannefaerd announced that Hybrid's playing lines had been selected for the opening AXL event at Rockhampton, Queensland. Separate website articles covered the event schedule and published field layout.[4]

Following the Rockhampton round in February, Hybrid reported that it was running second in the AXL series. The team's website linked to complete match results and series standings, although those details have not been recovered from the surviving front-page capture.[4] Photographs provide an additional contemporary record of the event.[5]

At the second AXL round, held at Fox Studios in Sydney in May 2005, Wellington Hybrid finished first.[6]

In September, Hybrid announced that it would attend the final AXL round in the Sydney area. A website countdown placed the event on 8 October 2005.[7] Photographs identify the venue as Mount White, New South Wales.[8] The team's pre-event statement expressed an ambition to win both the round and series; this was not a report of the final outcome.

Sydney Masters 2005
On 6 September 2005, Hybrid confirmed that it would enter the Australian Masters in Sydney that November. The event was hosted by Action Paintball and was expected to include approximately 40 teams, including the American professional team Infamous.[7]

Hybrid finished eighth after reaching the quarter-finals. Infamous won the tournament, while the Auckland team Menace finished second.[9][10]

Training facilities
Hybrid conducted a training session in Rotorua in January 2005.[16] Photographs show participants wearing jerseys from several earlier teams. Those jerseys do not establish that the represented teams formally merged into Hybrid or that every participant was a member of its tournament roster.

By August 2005, Hybrid was using both indoor and outdoor training facilities. On 21 August, it announced that it had obtained a new outdoor training ground on a soccer field, providing level turf for tournament practice.[7]

In January 2006, Hybrid announced that it was using an indoor training facility at the Daytona indoor go-kart centre in Petone. The facility was provided by TAG Paintball.[11]

Photographs from Kaiwharawhara in February 2006 have also been identified as showing Hybrid training in Wellington, although the Flickr album itself does not name the team.[12]

Club development
By February 2006, the organisation styled itself Wellington Hybrid Incorporated and operated both a competitive team and a wider paintball club. Its website contained separate sections for the team, club, sponsors, schedule, results and youth development.[11]

On 2 February 2006, Hybrid announced the appointment of Nigel Le Grice as Youth Development Manager. The appointment followed an increase in enquiries from school-aged people seeking an organised route into paintball.[11]

The resulting Young Gunz group was intended for secondary-school students, including individuals and teams. Older prospective participants were directed to contact the main club.[11]

Hybrid used P8NT Online for club and team discussion. Its website also provided a newsletter, calendar, gallery and downloads, and linked directly to its official Flickr archive.[10][11]

Later competition
Wellington Hybrid competed at the Big Boys Toys paintball tournament hosted by Paintball Adventure in Auckland in November 2006, finishing third.[13]

A separate photographic collection maintained by Matt Wong documents Hybrid's participation at the Sydney Masters in November 2006.[14] A final placing has not been established from the surviving album.

An Easter 2007 Flickr album maintained by Wong reports a first-place tournament result. The surviving album title and description do not identify the winning team, so the result cannot be attributed to Wellington Hybrid without further evidence.[15]

Players and personnel
The following people are identified by Hybrid's contemporary profile, website or photographic archives:

* Martin Dannefaerd – captain and manager; author of official team announcements.[3][4]
* Matt Wong (Stick) – player and contributor to the team's early website and photographic record.[2][6]
* Jono Clark – player identified in the team's historical record.
* Ryan Pike – player identified in contemporary photographs.
* Simon Galt (Big Sy) – player identified in contemporary photographs.
* Josh Bailey – identified in contemporary team photographs.
* Pete Hamilton – identified in contemporary team photographs.
* Nigel Le Grice – Youth Development Manager from February 2006.[11]

The archives contain further first names and nicknames, including Rosie and Trench, but their full identities or roles have not been established. People attending Hybrid training sessions were not necessarily members of its tournament roster.

Equipment and sponsorship
Following the opening 2005 AXL round, Hybrid credited SYN USA with supplying its playing jerseys. The report stated that the jerseys had been produced and delivered in time for the team's Australian campaign.[4]

The surviving photographs show Hybrid players using contemporary electronic tournament markers and inflatable-bunker equipment. Individual equipment visible in photographs does not necessarily establish a formal team-wide sponsorship arrangement.

Historical record
Hybrid's history is documented through its archived official websites, its March 2005 industry profile and photographic collections maintained by the team and participants.

The earliest recovered website was established under `hybrid.wpsa.org.nz/hybrid/` in September 2004.[1] It was subsequently rebuilt at `hybrid.wpsa.org.nz` and later moved to `hybrid.org.nz`.[2][7]

By December 2005, the website served both the competitive team and its wider club. It contained sections covering team results, schedules, sponsors, club information, tournament news, industry news and photographs.[10]

The March 2005 industry profile is a contemporary promotional document. It provides evidence of Hybrid's organisation, leadership, history and planned competition programme, but its statements of objectives should be distinguished from completed results.[3]

Some later Flickr accounts contain photographs from more than one team or period. Album ownership and matching uniforms are therefore not sufficient on their own to transfer results between Wellington Hybrid and the later Wellington Vendetta team.
