World Classic Paintball League
The World Classic Paintball League (WCPL) is an American paintball tournament circuit specialising in traditional woodland, Hyperball and earth-mound competition. Its first documented season was held in 2022, with events organised at paintball facilities across the United States.[1][2]
The league promotes classic tournament formats associated with competitive paintball during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly 10-player capture-the-flag competition. It is organised through a collective of independent tournament promoters, including Fred Schultz, Dan Colby, Tim Schloss and Jim Lively.[1][3]
Unlike modern X-Ball competitions, WCPL tournaments generally use individual games in which teams score points through eliminations, surviving players and flag objectives. The league principally promotes mechanical markers, although electronically operated markers are permitted under specified restrictions.[4]
History
[edit]Establishment and inaugural season (2022)
[edit]The World Classic Paintball League was established to provide organised competition for players interested in traditional tournament paintball.
Its organisers sought to revive formats played before inflatable-bunker speedball and X-Ball became dominant in professional competition.
The league's first documented tournament season took place in 2022.
The original published calendar included events in California, Florida, New York and Missouri. A seven-player tournament in the United Kingdom was also proposed, although its completion has not been independently confirmed.[2]
The 2022 championship records identify the following events:
| Tournament | Location |
|---|---|
| California Classic | Oroville, California |
| Florida 10-Man Classic | Hudson, Florida |
| New York Classic | Clintondale, New York |
| ICC/Montressor Classic | Clintondale, New York |
| Gateway Open | Bridgeton, Missouri |
The WCPL used the PBLeagues tournament registration and scoring platform to administer its season rankings.[5]
2022 season championship
[edit]The inaugural WCPL Open 10-man season rankings were headed by Master Blasters, which accumulated 420.23 points.
Master Blasters won both the California Classic and ICC/Montressor Classic.
The leading teams in the final standings were:
| Position | Team | Ranking points |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Master Blasters | 420.23 |
| 2nd | All-Americans 2 | 273.21 |
| 3rd | Lockout | 197.65 |
| 4th | Team Farside | 194.00 |
| 5th | Prime Suspects | 182.47 |
The results are preserved in the official PBLeagues 2022 season rankings.[5]
Subsequent seasons (2023–2024)
[edit]The WCPL continued organising classic-format tournaments during 2023 and 2024.
The competition incorporated independent regional events using the league's rules and ranking structure.
The tournament programme included competitions in Florida, California, New York and Missouri.
In 2024, documented events included the Florida Open at Panhandle Paintball in Holt, Florida, and the St. Louis Classic at Gateway Paintball in Bridgeton, Missouri.[6]
2025 season
[edit]The WCPL announced four events for the 2025 season.
The programme included three 10-player tournaments and the addition of a seven-player competition organised by Jim Lively in Oregon.
| Tournament | Dates | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| Panhandle Classic 10-Man | 3–4 May 2025 | Panhandle Paintball, Holt, Florida |
| Wisconsin Classic 10-Man | 2 August 2025 | Commando Paintball Sports, Little Suamico, Wisconsin |
| Jim Lively's Gold Rush Classic 7-Man | 6–7 September 2025 | Splat Action Paintball, Molalla, Oregon |
| Gateway Classic 10-Man | 11–12 October 2025 | Gateway Paintball, Bridgeton, Missouri |
The league described the Gold Rush Classic as a new addition to its 2025 programme.[7]
At the Panhandle Classic, teams competed on woodland and earth-mound fields.
The recorded leading finishers were:
| Position | Team |
|---|---|
| 1st | Los Angeles Xtreme |
| 2nd | SDG |
| 3rd | Semi Serious |
The results were reported by Paintball Dirt on 19 May 2025.[8]
2026 season
[edit]The WCPL published a five-event schedule for 2026, expanding the tournament programme to include an event in Georgia.
The announced calendar comprised:
| Tournament | Dates | State |
|---|---|---|
| Hate City Classic 10-Man | 18–19 April 2026 | Georgia |
| Panhandle Classic | 13–14 June 2026 | Florida |
| Wisconsin Classic 10-Man | 8–9 August 2026 | Wisconsin |
| Jim Lively's Gold Rush Classic 7-Man | 5–6 September 2026 | Oregon |
| Gateway Classic 10-Man | 10–11 October 2026 | Missouri |
The Georgia tournament was scheduled for Tallapoosa Paintball, while the other events retained established WCPL venues.
The league announced an entry limit of 18 teams per event.[1]
Competition format
[edit]The World Classic Paintball League specialises in traditional tournament formats, principally 10-player capture-the-flag competition.
The league's rules also provide for seven-player and five-player games.
The format differs from modern X-Ball competition, in which teams play repeated points within a timed match.
Fields
[edit]WCPL tournaments are primarily played on natural woodland fields.
Some venues also use constructed earth mounds, berms and Hyperball obstacles.
The league's regulations require balanced playing fields with designated starting areas and flag stations.[4]
Scoring
[edit]Under the league's published 10-player rules, points are awarded for:
- Eliminating opposing players.
- Retaining surviving players.
- Pulling the opposing team's flag.
- Returning and hanging the opposing team's flag.
The 10-player scoring system awards:
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Opposing player eliminated | 2 |
| Own player remaining | 1 |
| First pull of opposing flag | 20 |
| Successful flag hang | 50 |
The published regulations also provide for adjusted scoring in seven-player and five-player formats.[4]
Equipment regulations
[edit]The WCPL principally promotes mechanical paintball markers.
However, it is not exclusively restricted to markers without electronic components.
The league's published rules permit electronically operated markers limited to a maximum firing rate of 5.5 balls per second.
Mechanical and pump markers must comply with the applicable firing-mode restrictions.
The rules prohibit certain modifications, including reactive or automatically responding trigger systems.
Mag-fed markers are permitted, subject to the equipment regulations, while First Strike projectiles are prohibited.[3][4]
These restrictions are intended to preserve the playing characteristics of traditional tournament paintball.
Organisation
[edit]The WCPL operates through a collective of independent paintball tournament promoters.
Each participating event has its own organiser, while the league coordinates common competition rules and formats.[3]
Individuals identified by the WCPL as associated with its promotion include:
- Fred Schultz – Former professional player, media personality and promoter associated with the California and Wisconsin Classic events.
- Dan Colby – Paintball equipment developer associated with Air America and the Panhandle Classic.
- Tim Schloss – Paintball industry veteran associated with Gateway Paintball and the Gateway Classic.
- Jim Lively – Historical tournament promoter associated with the International Masters, Music City Open and Skyball, and organiser of the Gold Rush Classic.
- Steve Preskill – Associated with the Panhandle Paintball tournament programme.
- Bill Bailey – Listed among the league's event promoters.
The official WCPL website maintains a directory of participating organisers.[9]
Relationship to the International Classic Paintball League
[edit]The World Classic Paintball League is separate from the International Classic Paintball League (ICPL).
The ICPL was established in 2019 through the National Xball League and also promotes classic-format woodland and constructed-field competition.
The WCPL operates through its own group of independent promoters.
Both organisations have incorporated traditional 10-player paintball, but they maintain separate competition programmes and tournament structures.
Historical significance
[edit]The WCPL forms part of the revival of traditional tournament paintball formats during the 2020s.
Its competitions provide opportunities for players to participate in woodland and earth-mound tournaments using rules based on earlier forms of organised paintball.
The involvement of promoters including Fred Schultz and Jim Lively connects the league with individuals who organised and participated in national tournaments during the sport's formative decades.
The WCPL has also provided a competition structure for established and returning teams interested in classic-format paintball.
