Marty Bush is an American former professional paintball player and coach, best known for his longstanding association with the Ironmen. He competed during the development of professional tournament paintball in the 1980s and 1990s and remained with the organisation until his retirement from regular competition in 2001.[1][2]

Bush was particularly recognised for his tactical awareness, field positioning and accurate shooting. He subsequently assisted with coaching the Los Angeles Ironmen and was included in the inaugural Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons class in 2023.[3][4]

Playing career
Early career
Bush began competing in Northern California during the early development of organised paintball tournaments.

He became a member of the original Ironmen, playing alongside competitors including Bob Long, Shane Pestana and Darryl Trent.

Historical footage from the Store Wars III tournament, held at Paintball Hill in May 1992, documents Bush competing with the Ironmen.

An accompanying team photograph, believed to date from approximately 1992, also identifies Bush among the original players.[5]

During this period, professional tournament paintball was transitioning from predominantly woodland competition using pump-action markers towards organised speedball formats and semiautomatic equipment.

Bush was among the players who continued using pump-action equipment after semiautomatic markers became increasingly common.[6]

Ironmen
The original Ironmen became one of the leading American tournament teams during the early 1990s, winning three consecutive National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) professional season championships from 1993 to 1995.

Bush remained associated with the organisation throughout much of its championship era.[6][7]

Following the departure of Bob Long in late 1996, the original organisation continued separately from Bob Long's Ironmen.

Bush remained with the team associated with Dave Youngblood and Shane Pestana.

At the 1998 NPPL Chicago Open, held at Badlandz Paintball Field in Crete, Illinois, Bush competed for the Southern California Ironmen against Bob Long's new team.

Contemporary WARPIG reporting documented a direct exchange between Bush and Rich Telford, who was playing for Bob Long's Ironmen.

The report described Bush shooting accurately from the tape line, using short bursts of one or two shots while controlling an important section of the field.

Bob Long's team ultimately won the encounter.[8]

Bush was still competing professionally with the Southern California Ironmen in 2001.

The team's official NPPL roster listed him alongside Shane Pestana, Oliver Lang, Matty Marshall, Micah McGlocklin, Yosh Rau, Rich Telford, Billy Wing and other established players.[9]

Retirement
Bush announced his retirement from regular professional tournament paintball during the 2001 NPPL World Cup in Orlando, Florida.

Contemporary WARPIG reporting identified his departure as the end of an era for the Ironmen, noting that he had been associated with the team since its early years.

Bush explained that he was satisfied with his competitive achievements and intended to reduce his tournament commitments while remaining involved through player clinics and occasional appearances.[1]

His retirement was reflected in the changes to the Ironmen roster for the 2002 season.

At the 2002 Mardi Gras Open, WARPIG identified Bush, Shane Pestana and Brahim Estephan among the former members absent from the team's new professional line-up.[10]

Playing style
Bush was particularly associated with tactical planning and precision shooting.

He competed across the transition from woodland tournaments to artificial-bunker speedball competition, retaining an emphasis on field awareness and controlled shooting.

A retrospective account published by Paintball Story described Bush as an effective pump-action player who continued to compete successfully against opponents using semiautomatic markers.[6]

Iconic Paintball's 2021 historical assessment highlighted his ability to analyse tournament fields, identify favourable positions and develop strategies around opposing teams and individual players.[3]

Bush was also recognised for his snap-shooting technique, which was specifically mentioned in contemporary tournament reporting.[4]

Coaching and later involvement
Following his retirement from regular professional competition, Bush remained involved in paintball instruction and coaching.

At the 2004 PSP Los Angeles Open, held at the Pomona Fairplex in California, he assisted Shane Pestana in coaching the Los Angeles Ironmen.

Contemporary WARPIG coverage documented Bush's presence with the team during the tournament.[4]

His coaching involvement reflected the continued participation of former Ironmen players in the organisation during its transition to professional X-Ball competition.

Recognition
Bush has been recognised by paintball publications for his achievements and influence on early professional tournament tactics.

In September 2021, Iconic Paintball included him in its historical assessment of 50 notable professional paintball players.

The publication highlighted his tactical approach, field analysis and contribution to the development of competitive playing techniques.[3]

Bush was subsequently included in the inaugural Iconic Paintball Hall of Icons class, officially designated 2023.

His individual induction profile is labelled as a 2022 inductee, although the organisation's class archive identifies 2023 as its inaugural induction year.

The induction recognised his playing career with the Ironmen and his contribution to the tactical development of professional paintball.[11]
