New page

Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball MAX'D is a paintball video game published by Activision, first released for Xbox in October 2005. Developed by WXP, also known as The Whole Experience, the console game followed the 2004 title Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball. It features tournament paintball, real players and tools for planning team movements and shooting assignments.[1][2]

Versions were also released for Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2, with content and features varying between platforms.[3]

Development and release
Activision, WXP and Greg Hastings announced MAX'D on 17 May 2005. The announcement highlighted expanded tactical controls and multiplayer options, with WXP demonstrating the game's breakout-planning features at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo.[1]

Activision announced the Xbox game's availability on 18 October 2005. A PlayStation 2 version followed in 2006.[2][4]

Gameplay
The console game builds on the first-person tournament play of its predecessor. Players compete through paintball tournaments while directing computer-controlled teammates.[1][2]

A principal addition is the Breakout Manager, which allows players to plan their team's opening movements. Players can assign teammates to bunkers, choose whether they shoot while moving and direct their fire towards selected areas at the start of a point.[1]

The Xbox release includes a field editor for creating layouts and split-screen multiplayer for up to four players. Its cooperative career mode allows players to progress through the game together. Activision's launch announcement listed 213 field layouts and 29 tournaments.[2]

Featured players
MAX'D includes representations of real paintball players. Activision promoted a roster of 14 professional players, specifically naming Greg Hastings, Keely Watson and Chris LaSoya in its announcements.[1][2]

Their inclusion connects the game's fictional tournament progression with recognisable figures from competitive paintball.

Soundtrack
The soundtrack includes Play for Real, a collaboration between DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit and B-Real of Cypress Hill, recorded for the game. Activision's launch announcement also identified Puddle of Mudd among the featured artists.[2]
