New page

Fulda Gap is an annual American scenario paintball event held at Command Decisions Wargames Center in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Based on a fictional Cold War invasion of Western Europe, the event pits NATO forces against the Warsaw Pact in a large-scale woodsball battle featuring organised military units, armoured vehicles and strategic objectives.

Established during the 2000s, Fulda Gap has become one of the largest scenario paintball events in the southeastern United States. Its 2019 edition attracted more than 1,500 participants and featured 16 paintball tanks.[1]

History
Fulda Gap developed at Command Decisions Wargames Center, a paintball facility near Taylorsville, North Carolina, historically operated by Ken Spencer and Andrew Ferguson.

The venue comprised approximately 70 acres of playing terrain, including fortified bases, a simulated town, wooded areas and defensive positions.[2]

The event takes its name from the Fulda Gap in Germany, a strategically important corridor which NATO military planners considered a possible route for a Warsaw Pact invasion of West Germany during the Cold War.

Unlike Second World War-themed scenario events, Fulda Gap depicts a hypothetical conflict between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces during the 1980s.

Andrew Ferguson was a longstanding producer of the event, overseeing its development into a major gathering for American scenario paintball teams.

By 2011, Fulda Gap was attracting record participation, according to contemporary information published by Command Decisions Wargames Center.[2]

Growth during the 2010s
Fulda Gap continued expanding during the 2010s, attracting established scenario teams and individual players from across the United States.

The 2014 event was documented by Eric Engler in Paintball Media. Engler commanded the NATO forces against Warsaw Pact commander Chris Aguayo, with NATO winning the event.[3]

The event incorporated coordinated infantry operations, paintball tanks, simulated artillery and nuclear attacks, and missions involving the capture and defence of strategic locations.

The 2014 event also supported fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. According to Engler's contemporary report, the paintball event raised $10,050, with approximately $16,000 raised across that year's paintball and airsoft events and associated donations.[3]

Fulda Gap reached a documented attendance record in 2019, attracting more than 1,500 participants and featuring 16 paintball tanks.[1]

Changes in organisation
Following the 2019 event, Andrew Ferguson approached Eric Engler about assuming responsibility for producing the 2020 edition.

The COVID-19 pandemic prevented the planned 2020 event from proceeding in its original format. A substitute game was held at Command Decisions Wargames Center.[4]

Engler subsequently assumed responsibility for operating the venue in December 2020, following the departure of former operator Pete Russell.

Engler continued producing Fulda Gap with assistance from Andrew and Lee Ann Ferguson and the venue's field staff.[4]

Recent events
The 2022 event was advertised as the 16th running of Fulda Gap. Dezi Johnson commanded NATO against Warsaw Pact commander Jason Mann.[1]

In 2024, Warsaw Pact forces secured their second consecutive victory. The event attracted more than 1,000 participants and featured eight paintball tanks.[5]

The 2025 event again attracted more than 1,000 players, with ten tanks participating. NATO forces were commanded by Jason Berenato.[6]

The organisers designated the November 2026 event as Fulda Gap's 20th anniversary edition.[6]

Game format
Fulda Gap is structured around a fictional Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe during the mid-1980s.

Participants are divided into two opposing armies:

* NATO: Represents the Western military alliance, including American, British and West German formations.
* Warsaw Pact: Represents Soviet and allied Eastern European military formations.

Each army is led by an appointed general and supporting command staff.

Players join formations based on historical military units, including infantry, airborne, special operations and armoured units. These formations retain their identities between annual events.[7]

The game is designed as a strategic competition rather than a scripted historical re-enactment. Commanders determine how to deploy their forces, respond to opposing movements and pursue battlefield objectives.

Battlefield objectives
The playing field is divided into several strategic locations, including fortified bases, towns, bridges and observation positions.

Named locations include Firebase Alpha, Firebase Bravo, Sim City and Hamburger Hill.[7]

Points are awarded through controlling designated objectives and completing assigned missions.

Scenario rules incorporate simulated artillery, air strikes, engineering missions and tactical nuclear attacks.

Bridges and fortified positions can be temporarily disabled through special mission cards and engineering actions, altering movement and access to battlefield objectives.[7]

Paintball tanks
Armoured vehicles are a prominent feature of Fulda Gap.

Both armies may deploy purpose-built paintball tanks, which operate under separate vehicle and anti-tank rules.

Tanks support infantry operations, attack fortified objectives and provide mobile firepower.

The number of participating tanks has varied between editions, with 16 recorded in 2019 and ten in 2025.[1][6]

Event schedule
Fulda Gap normally takes place over a weekend in November.

The established programme includes Saturday daytime competition, a Saturday night game and further scenario competition on Sunday.[8]

Players eliminated during a battle return through designated reinsertion areas, allowing extended periods of continuous gameplay.

The event also includes camping, equipment vendors and associated social activities.

Venue
Fulda Gap takes place at Command Decisions Wargames Center in the Bethlehem area near Taylorsville, North Carolina.

The playing field covers more than 70 acres and includes woodland, open ground, ravines, creek beds, constructed fortifications and simulated urban environments.[7]

The terrain provides opportunities for both infantry engagements and vehicle-supported operations.

The venue has hosted the event throughout its documented history.

Significance
Fulda Gap is distinguished from many other large-scale scenario paintball events by its Cold War theme and emphasis on military organisation.

Its recurring NATO and Warsaw Pact formations provide continuity between annual editions, while the use of armoured vehicles and complex battlefield objectives supports extended strategic gameplay.

The event's documented participation of more than 1,500 players and 16 tanks in 2019 places it among the larger American scenario paintball gatherings of its period.[1]
