New page

The 2002 PSP Las Vegas Open was a paintball tournament organised by Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) from 1 to 5 May 2002 at the All American Sports complex in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The second PSP-produced tournament of the season featured five-player and ten-player competitions.[1]

Chicago Aftershock won the professional ten-player division. Other ten-player winners were Trauma, Static and Urban Quest; five-player winners were ECX Factory Team, Shadowmen and Wicked Junkies.[2][3]

Organisation and NPPL relationship
The tournament took place during a dispute between PSP and the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL) over their sanctioning agreement. PSP omitted the NPPL name from its event materials.[1]

During the tournament, NPPL officials maintained that the event was sanctioned and that its results would count towards the NPPL championship. WARPIG's subsequent report of 22 May clarified that negotiations had not produced an agreement in time and that the tournament had run without NPPL sanctioning.[1][4]

Following the event, the NPPL announced a separation from PSP. Further negotiations produced an agreement, announced on 21 May, restoring NPPL sanctioning for the remaining Chicago Open, Atlantic City Open and World Cup tournaments.[4]

Venue and scheduling
The venue provided indoor staging and exhibition space, with outdoor dirt playing fields. Eight inflatable-bunker fields were used for ten-player competition. Strong winds damaged netting supports during construction.[1]

In a published apology, organiser Jerry Braun recorded 26 five-player entries and 109 ten-player entries. He acknowledged that the schedule left some teams with short intervals between games, repeated appearances on particular fields and six or seven preliminary games on one day.[5]

Braun explained that scheduling software developed with WARPIG's Bill Mills remained unfinished. He had used its output as a framework and manually rearranged games, accepting responsibility for that decision.[5]

Ten-player preliminary games continued into Sunday morning before the semi-finals began.[1]

Five-player results
Final-round totals are taken from WARPIG's contemporary scoreboard. ClassicScores corroborates the placements, allowing for spelling variations in team names.[2][6]

Aftershock played its three semi-final games and its opening final-round game with nine players following Billy Ceranski's six-game suspension.[1]

After two final-round games, all four professional teams were separated by seven points. Aftershock won its last game against Strange, while Avalanche and Bob Long's Ironmen finished with a stalemate, securing Aftershock's tournament victory.[3]
